PERU! The Inca Heartland & Sacred Valley
September 13 – 19 • LAKE TITICACA ADD-ON September 19 – 22
Peru is famous for its diversity of compelling sights and experiences for the traveler! For our trip we have chosen to focus on a significant and stunning rural region which was the very core of the Inca Empire. We have also chosen to focus on villages or venues you might not discover or be able to visit easily on your own. Peru has the largest population of indigenous peoples in South America, with almost half of its approximate 28 million people being of native descent. The Sacred Valley, where we will spend our week, is home to the Quechua peoples whose amazing weaving, knitting and embroidery have been famous for centuries. It is an area of great natural beauty that also houses some of the most notable Inca sites in the country, including to Machu Picchu. While our last day will be at Machu Picchu, we are fortunate to spend several nights nestled at the base of the very significant site of Ollantaytambo – a cross road of the Inca Empire. The village of Ollataytambo is, in fact, a spectacular "living" Inca town, parts of which remain almost unchanged despite the passage of centuries. Our trip would not be complete without time in gorgeous Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage site combining Spanish colonial treasures, an Andean atmosphere and its own Inca wonders.
LAKE TITICACA ADD-ON Perched on Peru’s southern border with Bolivia is stunning Lake Tititcaca – said to be the seat of the origin of the Inca Empire and home to ancient myths still very much alive. This enormous inland sea, covering 8500 square kilometers, is also the highest navigable lake in the world and it is GORGEOUS! Its shores and many islands are home to the Aymara, Quechua and Uros peoples – the landscape is breath-taking and the cultures give an insight into the pastoral and wonderful nature of traditional Andean life. We will spend 4 days at the lovely Titilaka Lodge, right on the lake with extrodinary expansive views – constructed and conceived in harmony with the scenery and villages that surround it. A fabulous finale to the trip!
