A once-in-a-lifetime adventure! Can you imagine the roar of a lion hovering close, with elephants in the distance and birds overhead, while antelope flit through the fields? Southern Africa is home to some of the world’s most breath-taking wildlife viewing and stunning scenery. Our trip is a cross-section of the region’s abundance – from the great private Kruger game reserves, to Victoria Falls (one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World), to Cape Town, the “mother city” dramatically nestled between mountains and sea, whose beauty and rich culture is palpable.
CAPE TOWN Regularly acclaimed one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with a stunning oceanfront, acclaimed vineyards, heritage architecture, great restaurants and a flourishing arts scene – this diverse city is a perfect place to begin our trip! We’ll explore both the urban richness and gorgeous natural setting of the city including a trip to the winelands in one direction and the Cape of Good Hope in the other! En route we’ll meet some of the Cape’s contemporary artists and craftspeople, from the amazing folks at Streetwires to an important collector of South African Art (both contemporary and indigenous)…capped by culinary delights! Lodging at the boutique hotel, Four Rosmead (cited by the NEW YORK TIMES), on the slopes of Table Mountain with gorgeous views from each room.
THE SAFARI LODGES & CAMPS “Mother nature” is at its most spectacular and elemental in Southern Africa. Our goal is to experience pristine wilderness authentically by choosing intimate safari lodges and camps that are secluded and nestled in the bushveld, yet luxurious by any standard. We will be in 2 of South Africa’s most famous, game-rich reserves – Timbavati and Sabi Sands where the “big 5” abound (elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and buffalo). Game drives are in open-topped and elevated Land Rovers with a naturalist and tracker – a spectacular way to experience and learn about the wild-life and ecosystems and…bringing us regularly within spitting distance of the animals. Even the novice photographer’s nirvana!
• ZAMBIA/VICTORIA FALLS The mighty Zambezi River is a mile wide where it creates Victoria Falls! Tongabezi Lodge is nestled in a grove of African ebony trees, upstream from the falls and overlooking a gorgeous broad expanse of the river, with hippos on our doorstep and African Fish Eagles flying overhead. Each of our thatched roof cottages has an idyllic verandah with stunning views of the river and the wildlife. On our sunset boat ride and day cruises we’ll be spying a host of animals and birds both in and along the river and its banks.
• DJUMA BUSH LODGE/SABI SANDS RESERVE This wood and thatch lodge is a small, intimate camp with cottages immersed in a warren of indigenous gardens. The setting is capped by a beautiful water-hole which draws wildlife throughout the day – the interactions of the animals, their quiet comings and goings are mesmerizing and enjoyed from the library, upper deck or dining room of the lovely central building of the camp. A myriad of species reside here, including the white rhino, leopard, elephant and cheetah!
• TANDA TULA/TIMBAVATI RESERVE Our grand finale will be at Tanda Tula, one of the very first luxury tented camps in the Kruger area. The huge Timbavati Reserve has few camps and thus, fewer people, giving a visceral sense of being in the heart of the bush. This is one of the best game-viewing areas in the country – we saw a lion family with cubs on our last visit and game drives regularly are treated to sights of mammals large and small including antelope, buffalo, warthogs, mongoose, huge herds of elephant meandering to drink in the river, beautiful birds and much more. The intimacy of the camp and gorgeous setting serve to enhance the total experience.
